ADVENTURES

ALASKA: 2015 LEG 1 – TAHASIS TO DIXIE COVE

The sun is still with us! It was another beautiful morning this morning in Tahasis Inlet with a later departure – 0900.  We cruised down the Inlet which provided an opportunity to enjoy a cup of coffee and continue looking for eagle and sea otter before we got into open water.  Once in open water, it was batten down the hatches!  We hit about 20 knots of wind coming around the point into Kyquot Sound that provided for some good chop and a bit of a rodeo.   The fleet handled well, although we heard that Irish Mist’s plate settings were a little rattled. They invited Melissa and Steve aboard Navigator to join them for dinner but requested they bring some paper plates with them…

We set anchor tonight in Dixie Cove – a fishing trawler pulled in near dark as the winds were picking up.  Probably pretty rough off-shore and they must have been looking for somewhere to bed down too.  Ajax and Telita have rafted with Deception.  Ajax will join Deception for dinner.

Rick and Pat aboard Eldean take advantage of the kayaks aboard Deception to explore Dixie Cove.  Pat proves that we may have an opportunity at a Polar Bear sighting on this trip!… There is a dripping set of swim wear on board Eldean when Vanessa and Rowan swing by from Deception to pick up the Kayaks.  She shares that she went for a full 60-second swim!  The water is absolutely beautiful and it is tempting.

Vanessa and Rowan take out a dinghy and find a few fresh oysters that they share with the crew from Ajax when they arrive for dinner.  Anne from Ajax contributes some beautiful crab cake appetizers with the crab they caught with their traps yesterday.

The evening winds are picking up even here in the cove, so we’ll plan to depart 0800 tomorrow but remain flexible as to our float plan until we see how the winds shape up.
