2018 Desolation Sound Flotilla: Day 13 – Chemainus to Friday Harbor

Our route to Friday Harbor took us on a winding path through small waterways and passed the many Southern Gulf Islands. The narrow channels, with their swirling currents, were full of life.  Diving birds worked together to concentrate small fish into tight groups known as bait balls.  Small gulls and kittiwakes joined in on the feeding frenzy from above.  We also spotted seals and sea lions feeding in the water.

The day was clear and beautiful. As we navigated through the small islands, rocks and reefs we could see Mt. Baker and the Olympic Mountains on the horizon.  We passed by ferries, small cruise ships, working tugs, fishermen and other pleasure boaters.  Captain Jordan led us safely through the busy waters.

After crossing back into the US, we stopped at Roche Harbor to clear customs.  Roche Harbor is a picturesque resort and marina which had historically been a limestone quarry and limekiln site.  Traci and Kurt on AnamCara decided to stay at the harbor for a few hours and explore some of the shops.  The rest of us continued on to Friday Harbor.

This evening, Deception had everyone over for one final gathering.  We went through the end of trip logistics for returning our boats to Bellingham the next day.  And, we gathered together to celebrate a great trip and share photos and memories with new friends.  It was a great way to top off a wonderful trip.
