2018 Mother Goose Alaska Flotilla: Leg 1, Day 15 – Winter Harbour to Fury Cove

Mother Goose fleet let loose her lines just as the first rays of sun crested the island hills. Under a velvet blue sky our seven vessels exited Quatsino Sound traversing the 82 nautical mile crossing of Queen Charlotte Sound to Fury Cove.  Over the radio Marc remarked that “we must have the spirit of Admiral Pemberton with us” as the weather was astoundingly calm.

Mother Goose fleet rounded Cape Scott at mid-morning and waved goodbye to Gosling Hele Mai. Our fleet of six continued onward into Fitz Hugh Sound passing Calvert Island. Calvert Island recently made waves as the location of the oldest known human footprints. Hakai Institute and University of British Columbia Victoria recently publish their findings of 29 individual footprints carbon dated at 13,000 years old, roughly the end of the last ice age. This remarkable finding complicates the previous theories of human migration to North America via the interior by suggesting that our human ancestors utilized and survived along a coastal route.

Upon arriving in Fury Cove, Deception set a stern tie and rafted the fleet alongside. With the boats safely snuggled up, crews took off to explore the absolute beauty of Fury Cove. John took the dingy out to set a crab trap. Tim from Patos made us all look like wimps by taking a swim.  While Meg and Fiona kayaked about the cove. That evening the whole group dinghied over to the shell beach for a bonfire. The beach at Fury Cove a history midden, a relic of thousands of years of shelled clam and mussel deposits from local aboriginal peoples. Jordan and Brian built a fire, Noel poured the scotch and a wonderful time was had by all as we watched the sun go down over Fury Cove.
