2018 Mother Goose Alaska Flotilla: Leg 6, Day 13 – Port McNeill to Lagoon Cove

We left Port McNeill this morning at 10am without too far to go today.  It was just about 30 miles to Lagoon Cove.  The morning started out very foggy, cloudy and cool.  We stayed close together and wove through the islands checking out the small towns that seemed to pop out of nowhere.  We passed the world renowned Orcalab a research facility on Hanson Island that specializes in killer whale vocalization research.  They have a large network of hydrophones and cameras set up that they use to conduct their research.

Although we were traveling through Johnstone Straight and Blackfish Sound, which are both hot spots for viewing orcas, the killer whales eluded us today.  Hopefully our luck improves as we travel further south!  Still it was a beautiful day on the water.  In the narrow channels, the water took on a beautiful deep blue green color.  Eagles flew overhead and landed on the mossy limbs of the evergreen trees along the shore.  We also spotted many harbor seals, porpoises and groups of kayakers on the water.

Just before we arrived at Lagoon Cove, the clouds parted and blue, sunny skies shown through.  Lagoon Cove is a definite highlight of this trip.  This sweet little marina is situated on a picturesque point of East Carcroft Island.  It is a tiny spot and Dan and Kelley do a wonderful job of making it feel welcoming.  Guests are encouraged to walk around their property, play their yard games, and go through their traditional “exercise” stations where you can mow the lawn or chop the wood.

Another thing that makes Lagoon Cove special is that they host a potluck happy hour each evening for all of the boats staying at the marina that night.  This is a great way to socialize and meet other boaters.  It is always a fun evening as everyone shares stories and cruising tips along with tasty snacks.  All of our crews enjoyed a lovely and relaxing evening on board.
