2018 Mother Goose Alaska Flotilla: Leg 3, Day 8 – Berg Bay to Meyers Chuck

Mother Goose certainly knows how to dress for a party! Both Deception and Discovery were dressed with flags for the Fourth of July! The fleet looked superb as we got under way from Berg Bay, the sun dancing off the serene water, and made the quick trip to Meyers Chuck. The town of Meyers Chuck has 4 full time residents. Two of those residents, Cassy and Steve Peavy, have been running the local post office for many years. Cassy has thought about moving on from the rural postmaster life to be closer to her grand kids, but Steve couldn’t imagine life anywhere else than picturesque, and remote, Meyers Chuck. Additionally, there isn’t anyone to step up and take on the position after the Peavys. Without the post office, the full time and part time residents of Meyers Chuck would have to travel 11 miles to get their mail.  We certainly we happy to see Cassy’s smiling face when we arrived at Meyers Chuck.

Crews certainly made the most of dazzling sunshine and 80 degree weather! Many crews took a hike through the town and adjacent forest to visit the beach and enjoy the cool breeze coming off the water.  Abby, Al, Allan and Ben all took a more direct approach to cooling off and jumped into the 50 degree water! Wow! Meanwhile, Discovery’s crew had it made in the shade, of their flybridge that is.

Deception had the honor of hosting the Fourth of July potluck, and what a spread! All Eldean’s hard work crabbing paid off with a mountain of crab dip. And everyone delighted in Grand Adventure’s big pot of chili. Jordan had our mouths watering all day with a smoked brisket that couldn’t be beat. And finally, apple pie is a must for a Fourth of July celebration. To top it all off, a couple of local folks shot off several rounds of fireworks right off the docks. We couldn’t image better folks or a more beautiful setting in which to celebrate the Fourth of July!
