Mother Goose 2019: Leg 1: Day 11: Hurricane Anchorage to Klemptu

As we cruised through Spitfire channel and out into the open water, we saw lots of Sea otters floating in the kelp beds and bobbing up in the water to check us out.  As we entered out into the open ocean, the sun broke through the clouds lighting up our surroundings.

The day remained sunny and beautiful with minimal swell.  We spotted a few humpback whales feeding along the shoreline and watched them dive and fluke.  Further along as we entered Finlayson channel, the landscape changed dramatically.  The mountains on either side of us steepened and the channel narrowed as we entered into the fjord lands.

Today’s destination was an anchorage just south of the Kitasoo First Nation village of Klemtu.  We settled in to the beautiful anchorage just in time for lunch in the warm afternoon.  Later, we took the dinghies into town for a tour of the Bighouse there.  Justin, our guide, is an up and coming hereditary chief and he gave us a nice tour of the house, sharing some of the legends depicted in the carvings and answering our questions about life in Klemtu.

It was great to see the pride that he had for his community and culture.  The community has certainly had its ups and downs; but seems to be doing well with a renewed emphasis on creating a sustainable economy and teaching the native language and culture to the youth.

This evening the Discovery crew joined us for dinner aboard Deception.  Roy and Donna have done multiple Mother Goose charters throughout the years and are very experienced boaters.  Their traveling companion, Ron, is also very knowledgeable.  We enjoyed a lovely meal together.  They are very interesting people with lots of good stories.
