Mother Goose 2019: Leg 6: Day 4: Swanson Harbor to Dundas Bay

Mother Goose woke in Swanson Harbor to an incredible surprise! While we were just waking, six orcas cruised into the bay and were hunting Coho salmon right next to the boats! There is no better way to start the day than watching orcas breaching. Wow! Before we got going, Bonum Vitae pulled in a pot of crabs, way to go guys! The fleet departed Swanson and got underway beneath a grey sky for Dundas Bay. The afternoon remained cool and misty, giving Dundas Bay a magical, earthy feeling. Boats picked out their very own patch of paradise to anchor in, and Deception had the good fortune of having Discovery raft next door.

Dundas Bay was covered in flocks of Surf scoters and rafts of Sea otters. Just as the even sun broke through the clouds, Thea’s crew, Melinda and the Bonum Vitae brothers ventured out in our dinghies to watch the sea otters. We watched the otters, some of them mothers with little fuzzy pups in tow, play, groom and hunt for over 30 minutes. That evening Doug, off of Discovery, graciously gave his “clock talk”. Doug’s talk covered twenty years of work drafting plans for and machining a replica of John Harrison’s earth-shattering clock invention. A clock so revolutionary that it made it possible to plot longitude, for the first time! A very relevant, one could even say timely, topic for our Mother Goose fleet. Thank you Doug for your interesting talk and inspiring craftsmanship!
