2024 Inside Passage Flotilla North – Day 12 Port McNeill to Big Frypan Bay

We had a bright and early start to the day leaving Port McNeill. With a beautiful sunrise to greet us we were “grinning like Chesire cats” as Captain Bill would say. Although the coffee played a part in lifting our spirits as well.

As if on cue, the moment we started to untie our lines the rain began to fall, foreshadowing the conditions of the journey that lay ahead. Underway we passed a silly sea otter floating along like a log, seemingly unbothered by the choppiness of the waves.

Coming through the passage by Hurst Island we saw at least twenty eagles clustered in groups on the large boulders and spread out among the trees. To our delight we also spotted two more adorable sea otters. It was just an eagle and sea otter kind of day!

As we got to Pine Island, we reached the point of no return, sailing into the open waters. Starting out the morning with waves only about one foot in height, the waves became drastically larger, reaching roughly eight feet. The goslings periodically disappeared between the waves, bobbing up and down.

With some downtime during the evening, Jess and Nate went out to do some fishing. Meanwhile, Andy, Tim, and Landon set out for some dinghy driving lessons and to drop a couple crab pots. After an eventful day out at sea, most people were more than happy to take the evening to just relax and unwind.
