Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) 2023

While many Americans are celebrating Thanksgiving today, for our Service Manager, Matt Clark, Thanksgiving is being spent racing across the Atlantic Ocean. Competing against 200+ other boats, Matt is a crew member aboard Saltair, a Hallberg-Rassy 57 launched in 2023, Hull #14 (the 13th built), operated by friends Adam, Guillemette, and their son Seth.

Adam and family left their home in San Francisco in June, beginning their epic circumnavigation of the globe. The journey aboard Saltair began in Ellos on the West Coast of Sweden, where they officially boarded, setting sail for Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the official starting point for the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) event, and where our capable service manager Matt joined in on the fun, filling the role of tactician.

The ARC has been taking place every November since 1986, and follows the classic trade wind route, propelling boats and crew to Saint Lucia; total time at sea is usually 18-21 days.

After arriving in the Caribbean and waving goodbye to Matt, Adam, Guillemette, and Seth will continue on their journey around the word, via the Panama Canal – Galapagos – Marqueses – French Polynesia – Fiji / Tonga – Australia / New Zealand – South Africa (Cape Town) – Brazil –  Caribbean. Learn more about their travels by visiting Saltair Afloat.

As for Matt and the crew on Thanksgiving today, it looks like they’re just north of Cabo Verde, off the West coast of Dakar. Their Iridium GO! Satellite communications device updates their position hourly on the PredictWind tracking site.

They also have a YellowBrick YBi3 tracker, which updates the YB Tracking Race Viewer website every four hours. This map shows many of the boats in the ARC event together, so you can see where Matt and crew are stacking up against everyone else. Go have a look and see if you can find them.

You might be asking yourself, “what’s on the Thanksgiving menu whilst in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean?” According to trusted resources, their menu includes roast chicken, potatoes, roasted squash and brussels sprouts, cranberry sauce, and apple muffins for dessert! Doesn’t sound like anyone is roughing it.

Until then, we wish everyone participating in ARC 2023 a safe and exciting journey across the Atlantic. Have fun everyone and good luck!
