Trine is an Arthur Holth design for a well-known cruiser-class in Norway called the 40kvm2 Spissgatter (40 square meter double -ender). An estimated 20 boats were built between the years 1939 and 1947 at the Grimsoykilen boatyard in Sarpsborg. Each marked the “W” registration number. Being the ninth built of the class, Trine’s mainsail bears W 9.
These are not one-designs but built according to a restriction measurement rule. This means that the lines could vary within the stipulated maximum and minimum measurements. Length over all varied between 10.46 and 10.5 meters; waterline length between 8.19 and 8.30 meters; beam between 2.60 and 2.73 meters and draft between 1.60 and 1.92 meters.
Trine was built in 1941. This being during the war in occupied Norway there were a lack of materials, so iron screws were used. These ultimately failed causing wood sickness in all the wood below the water line. The previous owner found her in this state of disrepair and then spent the next 10 years restoring her. He fabricated new frames from oak and scarfed them into those portions above the water line that escaped wood sickness. He replaced all new floor timbers, sternpost, keel, and deadwood. A new deck and cabin were constructed of cold-molded cedar covered in fiberglass. The boom and mast (spruce) are original though repaired.
The current owner found Trine on the hard in Sidney, BC. The project had stalled during re-planking. He worked alongside an accomplished shipwright to complete hanging the strakes and then brought the boat back to Bellingham, WA to complete fitting out the hull over a five-year period. This included replacing all the fasters with silicon bronze; wedge-seaming the planks; fairing the hull; building all the interior furniture installing the new yanmar engine, electrical wiring, plumbing, electronics, painting, varnishing etc. All the lines, rigging and lifelines were replaced by a professional rigger. A new mainsail and furling headsail were made by Carole Hasse/Port Townsend Sails.
Trine has been immaculately and lovingly maintained since launched in 2008. She has her own unique personality with mix of original and custom above and below deck lavish use of exotic woods (mahogany, sapele & teak); raised paneled cabinetry a la N.G. Herreshoff; and an efficient, comfortable layout designed by boat builder/designer Paul Gartside. Her below deck amenities include a large fore berth, singe berth amidships, propane stove, ice box, sink and diesel heater. This restoration project is now complete and with modern electrical and plumbing installed,.Trine is now ready to do what she was meant to do..New Yanmar 3GM was installed in 2008 and has less than 300 hours. If you would like to own a completely turn key classic, this is your chance. This boat is not a project. She is ready to sail tomorrow! You cant say that about too many vessels of this vintage!
