Desolation Sound 2023: Day 8: Octopus Island Lay Day

We woke up to a beautiful sunrise on a peacefully quiet bay where bird calls could be heard from far away. You’ll never have a more peaceful morning than one like this. Slowly, more sounds started to fill the air as the day began. Today’s adventure was a hike up to Newton Lake. We shuttled everyone over to shore and made our way into the forest.

This trail begins by crossing the island to the bay on the other side, named Small Inlet. For those feeling up for a bigger adventure we started to make our way up hill. The trek upwards is well worth the effort when you reach Newton Lake. The crystal-clear blue water greeted us with sparkling sun across the surface. We stopped for a snack break and enjoyed the view before making our way back down.

Yet again, we were not disappointed by our fungus friends. One very special find was a cauliflower mushroom. These beautiful mushrooms have a slight curry smell when fresh and are delicious. Foraging is a wonderful way to have a relationship with the woods, but you have to be careful before consuming! We did harvest some of the cauliflower mushrooms and a golden chanterelle to share in the evening.

Pamelican hosted us on their bow for a sunset gathering. We got to try our foraged mushrooms from earlier along with some other treats. Wonderful conversation carried us into the evening until the disappearing sun and the warmth of the day started to fade. We all made our way to our home vessels and fell asleep happy from a full day!
