ALASKA: LEG 1- LOWE TO BAKER INLET

We left the roar of Lowe Inlet’s tidal falls in the distance and motored once more out onto the placid waters of Grenville Channel. We had only a couple hours of motoring today, and yet another day of glorious sun and calm winds ushered us quickly up to Baker Inlet, a tranquil jewel of and anchorage separated from the main channel by the narrow and twisted Watts Narrows.Everyone floated on through with a couple knots of currents pushing on our sterns and emerged into a veritable northern Shangri-La. Snowcapped peaks surrounded us, mirrored perfectly on the surface of the inlet. From the deck of our boat we could trace the courses of a multitude of babbling streams from the snowfields high above down through rocky escarpments and ancient forest and at last into the seaweed covered rocks on the shore. The sun shone hotly, and with anchors set we trailed our feet in the water and explored the coves and small islands by dinghy. Small fishing boats came and went through the afternoon, checking their shrimp pots and trying their luck for salmon.

Ajax was first to spot the plump and glossy black bear who came to keep an eye on us and sample the fresh grasses growing the water’s edge around sunset. He came and went in and out of the trees at a relaxed and unhurried pace, occastionally settling on his haunches to thoughtfully chew some grass and enjoy the evening. What a treat for us to sit in deck chairs on the stern and take in the magnificence!

Just about desert time, our ursine friend ambled down to the head of the cove and found an especially succulent patch of grass to sample. While he bent to his work a brilliant and huge full moon rose over the ridge above him.
