ALASKA: 2015 LEG 4 – TAKU HARBOR TO JUNEAU | NW Explorations

It was with a certain twinge of sadness that we cast off our lines today and made for Juneau, knowing that this was the last day of the journey for most of the crews.  As we rounded Douglas Island the radio filled with the chatter of busy fishermen and recreational boaters and skiffs and scows of all descriptions motored through and around our little group.

The bustling Auke Bay marina encapsulates the frontier mentality that is still often prevalent in this far flung land. There is no harbormaster and the transient docks are embroiled in a sort of friendly anarchy, with fishing boats, runabouts, and yachts often rafted three and four deep. While we fueled the boats, Captain Rich made a valiant effort and managed to secure space for all of us on the same float! After a break for lunch, we all gathered aboard Deception for a final meeting. We recounted our adventures, shared a few of our best photos, and new friends shared their contact details.

With our meeting at an end, we said our heartfelt goodbyes, and with hearts and minds filled with the memories of an incredible trip The crews of Aquila, Ajax, Navigator, Telita, Eldean, and Deception went their separate ways. Rumor has it, however, that most of them ended up together at the Red Dog Saloon for a round of their famous Duck Fart cocktails later that night.
