The hum of Cassy’s skiff broke the morning stillness in Meyers Chuck this morning as she motored across from her home on Meyers Island to deliver us baskets of steaming hot buttery cinnamon rolls. Cassy is one of the few full time residents, and in addition to baking rolls to order is also the town’s postmistress, a seamstress, and manages the art gallery. Needless to say, the rolls are delicious.
Marine traffic increased rapidly as we cruised across Behm Canal, seiners headed out for tomorrow’s opening as small skiffs carried Sunday fishermen out to their favorite spots. Seaplanes and the occasional helicopter buzzed overhead as we entered the Tongass Narrows. Our little fleet stopped only once, to wait for the diminutive airport ferry to depart its wharf on Annette Island.
With the boats fueled we tied up in Bar Harbor, content with new friends and new experiences, and with a twinge of sadness to be leaving so soon. The crew of Deception and all of NW Explorations wishes all the crews of leg five the very best and we hope to see you all again soon!
